3. Red-backed Poison Frog (Ranitomeya reticulatus)

The second most poisonous frog in its genus, after the splash-backed poisoned frog, is a Peruvian red-backed poison frog (Ranitomeya reticulatus) that has a moderate toxicity.

This does not mean you can take it easily, because even though the poison is moderate, it can still make serious injury to humans and kill animals like chickens.

This frog poison is a neurotoxic originating from the ant ants it feeds, then deposited in its skin glands - and made a powerful defense against potential attackers who do not care about the warning colors.

Given the fact that there is only one ground serpent (Epinephelus Leimadophis) that has resistance to this poison and poison from other poison dart frogs, this creature will not be your meal anytime soon!

4. Strawberry Poison Dart Frog (Oophaga Pumilio)

With its red skin, the little strawberry poison arrow, which is native to Central America, is one of the most beautiful of the species listed here.

The poison is strong enough, causing swelling and burning sensation, but still much weaker than the Phyllobates poison dart frog genus.

Strawberry poison dart frogs get poison from the food that is mites. Mites are a small arachnid species that is the main source of toxic alkaloids found in frog skin.

This means biodiversity in frog habitats affects toxicity of toxins - and thus also affects its ability to repel predators.

Conservation efforts need to consider not only the frog but the mite that supplies its self-defense system.

However, like all poison dart frogs, this frog is also native to South America and will lose its toxicity in captivity when it lacks natural food.

8. Splash-backed Poison Frog (Ranitomeya variabilis)

The tree-dwelling species found in Ecuador and Peruvian rainforests, the splash-backed poisoned frog is the most poisonous toad in its genus, with leather secretions capable of killing up to five humans.

The dotted color may look beautiful, but it contains a very clear and simple message: Stay away!

9. Phantasmal Poison Frog (Epipedobates tricolor)

This killer frog is really small but has a toxicity that belies its size. Less than Just a half inch in length, but it's a very powerful punch pack.

Its poison can easily kill predators and human candidates, but it is also unique because of the fact that painkillers that are 200 times stronger than morphine - named epibatadine - have been developed from this frog.

They are threatened with extinction in Ecuador, their natural habitat, the Phantasmal poison frogs are much preserved in captivity by scientists who are also trying to get their toxins. Gloves and face masks are a must!

The Blue Reef Aquarium has been successful in breeding this poison frog, with 26 "born" frogs since 2010. Despite their deadly status, it is hoped that these poison frogs may one day help save lives.

Epibatadine is said to be non-addictive and has no other serious side effects like those of morphine.

10. Kokoe Poison Dart Frog (Phyllobates aurotaenia)

Phyllobates aurotaenia, also known as the kokoe toxic dart frog, is the smallest of the three most toxic frogs of the genus Phyllobates.

Like its sister species, this frog secretes powerful batrachotoxins through its skin.

Acid-like toxins, seeping through wounds, and possibly pores, cause symptoms ranging from unbearable pain and fever seizures and paralysis.

So far there has been no confirmed human death, but allegedly could also cause death.

To obtain poison dart frogs of cocoa and related species, tribes from Colombian forests pierce frogs with sticks and place them on fire so that poison comes to the surface, ready to be applied to the end of their arrows.

11. Black-legged Dart Frog (Phyllobates bicolor)

The second most toxic frog on Earth is a black-legged poisoned arrow frog, or Phyllobates bicolor, found in western Colombia.

It is slightly smaller than Phyllobates terribilis and its toxicity is not as strong as Phyllobates terribilis, but equally dangerous.

Enough 150 micrograms of the poison needed to kill a person, and human death has been confirmed. Batrachotoxin causes fever, extreme pain, seizures and, ultimately, death with respiratory paralysis and muscle.

The black-legged arrow frog gets its name because often the front legs and the back legs are dark greenish.

Regardless of its toxicity, this frog, like other poisoned dart frogs, is a dedicated parent: the man carries a tadpole on his back, which is clogged with mucus.

While the frog's back is a safe place for tadpoles, a clever predator will soon step away as warned by a bright yellow color.
